Plutôt une bonne nouvelle que cette récupération du satellite.

Ce qu'on attend c'est une conclusion définitive sur l e dysfonctionnement du Briz-M (la turbo-pompe défaillante c'est confirmé ?).
Et que la chaine de fabrication soit enfin sécurisée pour que cet étage soit à nouveau considéré comme fiable. Visiblement c'est pas simple de remettre de l'ordre dans la maison :bounce1:
D'autant que certains responsables pourraient être les fournisseurs de matériel en amont (inconstance de la qualité des alliages, fiabilité douteuse des composants électroniques dans les conditions de l'espace, etc ...)

Non pas de nouvelles: les conclusions devaient être fournies avant la fin de l'année 2012 mais rien n'est venu. En Russie les 10 premiers jours de l'année sont des vacances donc ça repousse sans doute d'autant la publication (ou l'établissement) des conclusions.

Dans son message de fin d'année le nouveau directeur de Khrunitchev, Seliverstov, a parlé d'une année 2012 très difficile... Effectivement. En même temps ils ont vu leur fusée Angara devenir la mieux placée pour prendre sa place à Vostochny à côté de la Soyouz, donc il y a de l'espoir...

Ca y est la comission a terminé son travail. Mais les résultats ne sont pas encore publics car le texte est soumis à l'approbation de Khrunitchev concernant les secrets d'état. Néanmoins on ne devrait pas tarder à connaître la raison du dysfonctionnement du Briz-M.

Il faudra encore attendre un peu pour connaître les causes de la défaillance parce qu'il faut de plus que la FROB examine les résultats de la commission d'enquête elle-même. Cette FROB commencera son examen le 30 janvier. Donc encore quelques semaines... à moins que des fuites d'ici là nous procurent l'essntiel du rapport plus tôt.

Et bien voilà on sait désormais à quoi est dû le problème avec le Briz-M grâce à des "fuites" dans l'industrie russes qui indiquent clairement la cause:
L'exposition prolongée au soleil entre les 3ème et 4ème allumages a affecté la viscosoté du carburant et provoqué un phénomène de cavitation lors du 4ème fonctionnement, phénomène qui a conduit à la rupture d'un roulement dans le moteur et d'une ligne d'alimentation. Pour résoudre le problème les ingénieurs proposent d'augmenter la pressurisation du système d'alimentation et de prévoir plus de temps lors des périodes d'attente pour refroidir le carburant.

Voilà qui est clair.

Je me souviens qu'un problème était déjà survenu il y a quelques années où on avait eu la rupture d'une ligne de carburant lors d'une période prolongée de fonctionnement (qu'avait nécessité la particularité de la mission). A cette époque, cela avait été attribué à des vibrations durant un temps excessif. Peut-être était-ce déjà le même problème...

Il va finir par être fiable ce Briz-M!...

un probleme d'homogeneïté de la viscosité du carburant, en sorte ?

La cavitation, c'est lorsqu'un problème de pression survient dans la canalisation d'alimentation et que le carburant passe de l'état liquide à l'état gazeux.
C'est "mortel" pour la pompe qui se retrouve à tourner à des milliers de tours par min "dans le vide" (de carburant) ... le rotor se met en sur-régime et généralement le rotor est détruit et ses débris font exploser la pompe.

On peut raisonnablement se poser des questions d'abord sur le contrôle de température des ergols dans les réservoirs puis dans les tuyauteries du circuit ... et ensuite sur la possibilité (ou pas) d'avoir une protection contre les rayons du Soleil (car cette exposition ne doit pas pouvoir être gérée par exemple par une rotation alternant exposition au soleil puis au vide spatial ?)

Conclusions finales de la commmission d'enquête: un problème dans la turbopompe côté oxyène lors du démarrage de la 3ème période de fonctionnement du Briz-M a endommagé un roulement qui a cassé lors de la 4ème période mettant fin à celle-ci 4 minute trop tôt. Mais pourquoi il y a eu un problème ce n'est pas précisé... Reprise des lancements en mars avec le lancement du SatMex-8.

February 12, 2013- The ILS Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB) concluded its review on February 7, concurring on the most probable root cause and the associated corrective action plan of the December 8, 2012 anomaly of the Yamal 402 Proton launch The FROB analyzed the findings and recommendations of the Russian working group, which included participation from experts from TsNIIMash (Central Scientific Research Institute of Machine Building), M.V. Keldysh Research Center and Khrunichev State Research and Space Production Center (Khrunichev).

The members of the FROB agreed with the findings of the Russian investigation that the most probable root cause of the failure was due to a combination of adverse conditions which affected the operation of the Breeze M main engine during the startup of the 3rd burn causing damage to a bearing on the oxidizer side of the turbo pump. This ultimately resulted in the failure of the bearing during the 4th burn and caused the 4th burn of the Breeze M to end about four minutes early, with subsequent separation of the spacecraft. The spacecraft, built by Thales Alenia Space for Russian satellite operator, Gazprom Space Systems, was successfully maneuvered to its orbital position and was declared fully operational on January 8th 2013 after completing its on orbit tests.

“My sincere appreciation goes out to our customers, insurance underwriters and independent subject matter experts for their thorough and diligent participation in the ILS FROB process. We thank our customers for their support as ILS Proton proceeds towards return to flight,” said ILS Vice President of Programs and Operations, John Palmé.

The ILS Proton return to flight mission will be the Satmex 8 satellite for Satélites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V. (Satmex) next month. Scheduling of this mission and of the remainder of the ILS Proton near term manifest for 2013 is currently being determined.

On avait évoqué un problème de cavitation. Ce qui cadrerait assez bien avec un sur-régime de la turbopompe et la destruction d'un roulement.
Si cela était lié à l'exposition du Breeze-M côté soleil et à une gazéification d'une partie de l'ergol avant l'admission dans la turbopompe .... je ne sais pas trop s'ils ont des solutions ?

Pour conclure cet épisode voici la déclaration de ILS expliquant le problème qui est survenu: "The adverse thermal conditions were due to higher than previously recorded propellant temperatures at liftoff combined with higher than previously recorded thermal soak-back of engine heat to the Breeze M prior to the 3rd burn."

February 14, 2013 - International Launch Services (ILS) has issued additional details regarding the most probable root cause and corrective actions presented to the ILS Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB) concerning the Yamal 402 Proton launch anomaly which occurred on December 8, 2012.

The members of the FROB agreed with the findings of the Russian investigation that the most probable cause of the Yamal 402 Proton launch anomaly was due to a combination of adverse conditions which affected the operation of the Breeze M main engine during the startup of the 3rd burn.

The combination of adverse conditions were predominantly thermal in nature and affected the conditions at the oxidizer inlet line to the Breeze M main engine prior to the 3rd burn ignition and resulted in a large volume of oxidizer gas (rather than liquid oxidizer) at the engine inlet, exceeding the Breeze M main engine specifications. The volume of gas was ingested by the Breeze M turbopump at the start of the 3rd burn, leading to over-speed of the oxidizer turbopump bearing without the cooling normally supplied by liquid oxidizer. The over-speed damaged the bearing, which eventually led to the premature shutdown of the fourth burn. The adverse thermal conditions were due to higher than previously recorded propellant temperatures at liftoff combined with higher than previously recorded thermal soak-back of engine heat to the Breeze M prior to the 3rd burn.

Several corrective actions will be implemented, and include management of both satellite and Breeze M thermal requirements to ensure adequate margin to prevent future recurrence of this anomaly. No Breeze M hardware modifications are required.

The ILS Proton return to flight mission will be the Satmex 8 satellite for Satélites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V. (Satmex) on March 27 (March 26 EDT) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The corrective actions required by the FROB to prevent future recurrence of the anomaly have been started and are currently on schedule to support the new launch date. Scheduling of the remainder of the ILS Proton near term manifest for 2013 is currently being determined.

Le problème n'est donc pas dans la partie moteur proprement dite ... mais dans la partie alimentation (réservoir et tubulure).
Alors ... plus d'isolant thermique ? Meilleure rotation pour alterrner exposition au Soleil et à l'espace ???? Cela ne parait pas très complexe à réaliser.
Ce qui est finalement plus étonnant c'est que le problème ne se soit pas produit avant ? La complexité du trajet pour atteindre le GTO a ses inconvénients.
