About this book

- Describes the technology of inflatable modules and how establishing these habitats in orbit could generate an orbital economy
- Explains the details of one of the foremost emerging private space exploration ventures
- Offers informed speculation on possible lunar and Martian bases that the future may hold

As private contractors take over more and more of the tasks formerly entrusted to NASA, Bigelow Aerospace is primed to become one of the largest movers and shakers
of future space stations and missions. Relying on expandable modules that inflate into space habitats, this cutting-edge technology is presented here from its inception to the challenges and opportunities ahead.  To make these expandable modules feasible, Bigelow relies on a strong yet flexible proprietary material that allows for safety, life support, radiation shielding, thermal control and communications verification testing, while being tougher and more durable than rigid modules. The possibility of these expandable modules opens up the arena for a space economy that includes private ventures as well as providing new opportunities for NASA's research-focused human spaceflight plans.  This book serves as an informative text and reference guide for all those who now work or hope to work in the manned commercial space arena. It provides unique insight into and understanding of how Bigelow Aerospace’s expandable module technology is changing the face of commercial spaceflight and is laying the foundation for an orbital economy.

About this book

- Provides a detailed look at the events and policies surrounding the Iranian space endeavor
- Written by a specialist who has personally experienced and witnessed the procedures involved
- Enlightens the reader to the historical, legal, social and cultural aspects of the Iranian space endeavor

For those who see the trend of progress and movement of the Iranian space endeavor from the outside, it can be difficult to understand what goes on behind the scenes. However, for one who observes these events firsthand, they take on a very different meaning. In this book, the author brings new and different profiles of Iran’s space endeavor to light. Iran claims to be the ninth leading country in the world capable of manufacturing satellites and launching them, plans to land an astronaut on the Moon within a decade, and says its own president plans to be the first Iranian astronaut to travel into space. The author presents in this book that not all of these claims are quite as they seem. In addition to technical explanations, the book also includes historical, legal, social and cultural aspects of Iran’s space program as well. It is the author’s goal to create a tangible feeling of Iran’s space endeavor for the readers.

The Cassini-Huygens Visit to Saturn: An Historic Mission to the Ringed Planet
by Michael Meltzer

About this book

- Covers the Cassini-Huygens mission to date in unmatched depth and completeness
- Highlights an important discovery in the search for life, the revelation by Cassini that Saturn's moon Enceladus has the environment to conceivably harbor life
- Relies on over 50 interviews conducted with NASA and ESA mission staff for a behind-the-scenes look at how the mission was conducted

Cassini-Huygens was the most ambitious and successful space journey ever launched to the outer Solar System. This book examines all aspects of the journey: its conception and planning; the lengthy political processes needed to make it a reality; the engineering and development required to build the spacecraft; its 2.2-billion mile journey from Earth to the Ringed Planet; and the amazing discoveries from the mission. The author traces how the visions of a few brilliant scientists matured, gained popularity, and eventually became a reality. Innovative technical leaps were necessary to assemble such a multifaceted spacecraft and reliably operate it while it orbited a planet so far from our own. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft design evolved from other deep space efforts, notably the Galileo mission to Jupiter, enabling the voluminous, paradigm-shifting scientific data collected by the spacecraft. Some of these discoveries are absolute gems. A small satellite that scientists once thought of as a dead piece of rock turned out to contain a warm underground sea that could conceivably harbor life. And we now know that hiding under the mist of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is a world with lakes, fluvial channels, and dunes hauntingly reminiscent of those on our own planet, except that on Titan, it’s not water that fills those lakes but hydrocarbons. These and other breakthroughs illustrate why the Cassini-Huygens mission will be remembered as one of greatest voyages of discovery ever made.

The Twenty-First Century in Space

Series: Springer Praxis Books

Subseries: Space Exploration

by Ben Evans

About this book

- Continues the History of the Human Space Exploration miniseries by Evans, which commemorates over 50 years of humans in space
- Provides a detailed account of the goals, missions, setbacks and achievements of those who ventured into space in the twenty-first century
- Provides complete coverage of the future of the American space program and the emergence of new space programs around the world

April 12, 2011 was the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering journey into space. To commemorate this momentous achievement, Springer-Praxis has produced a mini-series of books that reveals how humanity's knowledge of flying, working, and living in space has grown in the last half century.

The fifth and final volume in the miniseries focuses on ‘The Twenty-First Century,’ in which the construction of the International Space Station, from the launch of its first element (the Russian Zarya control module) in 1998 to the end of the Shuttle-focused construction effort (with the Tranquility Node-3, the cupola and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) in 2011. All the expeditions up to the 2011 anniversary of Gagarin are explored in detail, the make-up of crews, the shift from three-crew to two-crew, the effect of the STS-107 tragedy on the project, and the eventual push to a six-person permanent occupancy. The final Hubble repair mission, STS-125, provides an opportunity not just to discuss the flight itself, but also to explore the mechanics and principles behind having ‘rescue missions’ on standby and will spur a discussion of the changing focus of Shuttle operations in the wake of Columbia. The remarkable arrival of the Chinese Shenzhou on the scene and its whirlwind of achievements in such a short space of time is explored, as its potential for contributions in the future. Similarly, the arrival of the first ‘space tourists’ with Dennis Tito in 2001 is considered and the future of such projects are discussed, including Virgin Galactic. The future in space is considered: ongoing Russian projects, Orion, the return to the Moon and on to Mars and this book closes with a snapshot of where humanity may be on the hundredth anniversary of Gagarin.

About this book

- Serves as a go-to book and reference guide for suborbital space tourists, space scientists and those who want to know how one maverick company pulled off one of the most remarkable achievements in manned spaceflight
- Describes the medical and training requirements for those flying on board, the critical roles of the astronaut trainers (of whom the author is one), and the new breed of commercial space pilots
- Provides an insight into the companies supporting Virgin Galactic, including space training agencies such as NASTAR and rocket companies such as Sierra Nevada

This book examines the role of Virgin Galactic as a pioneer accessing the suborbital frontier. The trail being blazed is establishing a partnership with governments and the private sector that will eventually permanently integrate the free market’s innovation of commercial suborbital space activities. Until recently, spaceflight had been the providence of a select corps of professional astronauts whose missions were experienced vicariously by the rest of the world via television reports and Internet feeds. These space-farers risked their lives in the name of science, exploration and adventure, thanks to government-funded manned spaceflight programs. All that is about to change, in no small part to Virgin Galactic. Richard Branson predicts his spaceship company is less than 12 months from the first revenue-generating suborbital flight. With more than 600 seats sold at $250,000 each, what started off as a dream to send people just for the excitement of a voyage to look back and marvel at Earth, has finally turned into a business. How did the company get to the point it is today and what will be the opportunities offered when suborbital trips become routine by the end of 2014? Additionally, what are the training and qualifications necessary to become a civilian astronaut?

About this book

- Emphasizes the technology of space probes in terms of structures, propulsion, power, communications and data processing systems, and scientific instrumentation
- Provides comprehensive coverage that ranges from the earliest planetary probes to the most recent planetary flights and missions
- Details many grounded and unfulfilled missions, which may still be proven to be useful in the future

- Looks ahead to possible future robotic missions and the prospect human exploration of Mars
- Thoroughly illustrated with 225 images that bring the missions and time period to life

This series of four books marks the 50th anniversary of the start of the “space age,” which opened with the launch of Sputnik in 1957, by providing a comprehensive account of how we have used robotic spacecraft to explore the Solar System. It starts with a review of what we knew - or thought we knew – about the Solar System immediately prior to dispatching the first space probes, and then discusses each project and the results obtained, to progressively explain how our knowledge of the Solar System has increased over the years.

“Part 4: The Modern Era 2004 – 2012” focuses on the robotic missions initiated since 2004, including NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Phoenix Mars lander, the Curiosity rover, the foiled Russian mission to the Martian moon Phobos, the joint NASA-European orbiters and rovers for Mars, and attempts by China, Japan and India to send probes. “Part 4” also discusses missions to other destinations, including the Rosetta, Deep Impact and EPOXI comet missions, the MESSENGER orbiter for Mercury, the European Venus Express orbiter, the troubled Japanese mission to Venus, the Dawn mission to the asteroids Vesta and Ceres, and the New Horizons mission to Pluto. The book concludes with a look ahead to possible future robotic missions and the prospect of sending humans to the Red Planet. It includes comprehensive appendices of data on the missions flown in the period 2004 to 2012, bringing the series up to date.

About this book

- Continues and complements the Apollo history given in the author's preceding book titled Countdown to the Moon
- Describes in detail the infrastructure and facilities of Kennedy Space Center and how they developed over time
- Relates critical events in Apollo/Saturn mission preparations that were not publicized at the time or which have been neglected over the years

The era of the Apollo Saturn missions was perhaps the most exciting period in American space exploration history. This book delves deeply into the operations, personnel, and facilities at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) that assembled, tested, and launched the iconic Apollo/Saturn missions of the 1960s and 1970s. Combining technical coverage with a generalist's enthusiasm for space, the volume gathers diagrams and photographs showing facilities that are not generally known to people who did not work at KSC—places such as the “blast room” inside the launch pad, the “ACE Rooms” in the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building, and the Central Instrumentation Facility.

Rather than focusing on a specific mission, the book follows the general capacity for the Apollo missions at the heyday of activity at KSC. Organizing the process flow necessitated extensive engineering expertise that created a vast network of tailored facilities. The massive launch bases are explored and the sequence of final tests is explicated, culminating in the Countdown Demonstration Test, a dry run for the actual launch. Throughout the book, the infrastructure needs and extensive facilities are illustrated by many archival photographs and plans. A number of engineers and managers from NASA and the Apollo/Saturn contractor teams have contributed their expertise and firsthand experience to the account.

For anyone who has ever wished they could explore the Launch Control Center, this book provides a complete guide to its facilities and infrastructure as they developed over time.

- Describes in detail the process of preparing a Moon mission for launch at Kennedy Space Center - the "mission before the mission"
- Relates critical events in Apollo/Saturn mission preparations that were not publicized at the time or which have been neglected over the years

The era of the Apollo Saturn missions was perhaps the most exciting period in American space exploration history. This book delves deeply into the processing flow that the many personnel at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) used to oversee operations at the vast facility that assembled, tested, and launched the iconic Apollo/Saturn missions of the 1960s and 1970s. Combining technical coverage with a generalist's enthusiasm for space, the text gathers diagrams and photographs with a careful explanation of how such a vast endeavor was kept on track.

Rather than focusing on a specific mission, the book follows the general processing flow for the Apollo missions at the heyday of activity at KSC. The process for putting together and testing the modules of the spacecraft are detailed from the time the major sections arrived at KSC via airplane to the time that the assembled spacecraft is wheeled over to the Vehicle Assembly Building and mated to the Saturn V. Throughout the book, the pre-launch process is illustrated with stories of incidents where things did not go according to plan, such as the explosion of security vehicles that drove through a cloud of liquid oxygen, the roots of the Apollo 13 accident in improper testing at the launch pad, and the rollback and disassembly of Apollo 16 because of an improperly tested fuel system. A number of engineers and managers from NASA and the Apollo/Saturn contractor teams contribute their expertise and firsthand experience to the account.

A companion to Ward's book on the KSC facilities and infrastucture, "Home of the Pad Rats", this volume explains the big-picture thinking that kept Apollo on track despite the vast size of the project. For anyone who has ever wished they could learn what it is like to be an engineer at one of the more than 400 consoles in the Firing Room as the 130-hour countdown gets underway, as well as all the invisible labor required to reach that point, this is the closest it is possible to get.

Enhancing Hubble's Vision: The Servicing Missions

Authors: David J. Shayler, David M. Harland

- Discusses over four decades of the planning, delays and triumphs of the Hubble service missions

Drawing upon first-hand interviews from those closely involved with the Hubble project over thirty years, this is the story of the HST servicing missions, how they were developed, and what challenges each crew had to overcome. The success of the Hubble Space Telescope would have been impossible without the key role played by the servicing missions that kept it operational.

An enormously complex undertaking, HST could have failed shortly after entering orbit, but thanks to the skills of scientists and engineers on the ground and the daring talents of the astronauts sent to service the telescope, it lasted for decades. The resulting findings, including many some of the most breathtaking images of space ever taken, changed our view and understanding of the Universe. Five Space Shuttle missions visited the telescope to upgrade and service the instruments and systems in that time, and their crucial work ensured that the Hubble Space Telescope remains a lasting legacy of the Space Shuttle program.

Enhancing Hubble’s Vision is also a story of teamwork and an international partnership, a perfect blend of human and robotic space exploration that will inspire all ages.

A Passion for Space

by Marianne J.Dyson

- Recounts the inner working of NASA through anecdotes about astronauts and NASA managers not found in any other books

Marianne Dyson relates the first five space shuttle flights from the personal perspective of mission planning and operations in Houston at the Johnson Space Center. Based on firsthand experience as well as original sources such as journals and NASA weekly activity reports, this is an
eyewitness retelling of the inside workings of Mission Control. The book contains historical details about astronaut and flight controller training that exemplify both the humor and serious aspects of space operations, including the almost unknown fire in Mission Control during STS-5 that nearly caused an emergency entry of the shuttle and yet was completely downplayed by NASA. The story begins with the inspiration of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon and follows the challenges of pursuing a science career as a woman in the 70s and 80s, when it was far from an easy path. Dyson became a space shuttle flight controller at a time when women were making the first inroads into flight control, a previously male-dominated profession. Written by an insider with a unique personal perspective and credentials to match, this a must-read for anyone interested in the institutional culture at NASA during one of its most definitional times.
