August 24th, 2011
Beijing, China, 24 Aug – Representatives of Brazil and China have scheduled for November 2012 the launch of a China Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS 3), the fourth Sino-Brazilian satellite in the space programme involving the two countries.
Sixty technical officials from Brazil’s INPE National Space Research Institute will be sent to China to ensure that the satellite is launched in November 2012.
The head of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), Marco Antonio Raupp, said in Beijing that he had received positive indications from Science Minister Aloizio Mercadante to go ahead with the process, even though contracting had yet to be officialised.
Besides the fourth satellite, the two countries have also scheduled the launch of CBERS 4 for August 2014.
The CBERS project began in 1988 and is the oldest partnership between Brazil and China. Previous launches were CBERS 1 (1999), CBERS 2 (2003) and CBERS 2B (2007). All send in images of the earth’s surface which are used for agricultural and environmental purposes, among others. (macauhub)
