Voilà 55 ans le 12 février 1955 la décision était prise de construire ce qui allait devenir le plus grand cosmodrome du monde: Baïkonour. Et il le reste même s'il a connu des phase plus faste pendant la période soviétique. On est pas encore prêt de mettre ce post dans la partie "histoire"...
A cette occasion le site de Roscosmos retrace l'histoire de ce centre spatial.
Et pour fixer les choses voici quelques chiffres le concernant:
Ground infrastructure Baikonur:
- 9 launch complexes, consisting of 15 launchers for launch vehicles;
- 4 launch pads for intercontinental ballistic missiles;
- 11 assembly and processing buildings, which house 34 technical complexes for the preparation of carrier rockets and spacecraft, as well as 3 charging and neutralizing stations to provide spacecraft and upper stages of rocket propellant components and compressed gases;
- Measuring complex with modern information center for monitoring and control of launch vehicle flight, as well as process monitoring;
- Oxygen and nitrogen production plant with total capacity of up to 300 tons of cryogenic products per day;
-Heating and electric power plant of 60 MW;
- Gas turbine power of 72 MW;
- 600 transformer substations;
- 92 communication centers;
- 2 airfield Class 1 ( "extreme" and "Jubilee" for "Buran");
- 470 kilometers of railways (special - 40 kilometers);
- 1281 kilometers of highways;
- 6610 kilometers of transmission lines;
- 2784 kilometers of lines.
